ind Projects contribute to the local community in many ways:- Local landowners earn rent or royalty for use of a very small portion of their land
- Creation of Temporary and Permanent Local Jobs
- Reduces Town Energy Costs
- Provide Payments in Lieu of Taxes for the Town
- Educational Programs with Local Schools
- Long Term, Below Market Electricity Rates for Schools and Public Buildings
Rural areas where the wind resources are abundant are the most typical site for wind project development. Wind resource and land terrain determine the wind turbine boundary. The wind turbine and access roads will only utilize a small portion of land (one to three acres) but zoning regulations call for significant separation between turbines and residential dwellings, property lines and power lines. As a result, relatively large pieces of land (15 acres or greater) are needed to construct a single turbine. The primary use of the land is for access roads to the turbine location, a small area for the wind machine and transformer, and a graveled pad construction and maintenance.
Single Turbine Installations
At Quabbin Wind we specialize in single-turbine installations upon a site. For example, on a 50-acre site we place one wind turbine. This allows the local landscape to retain its beauty and integrity while a natural, local resource, such as wind, is farmed to the benefit of the community.
Care in Planning and Zoning
Depending on jurisdiction and existing zoning requirements, Quabbin Wind will approach local boards for variances or approvals for single turbines. Roads, wind turbine foundations, underground cables, overhead power lines and the wind turbine itself must all be approved for installation.
Quabbin Wind also considers wildlife habitat, land use/encroachment and a variety of other compliance requirements.
Benefits To A Community's Landowners
Landowners are paid a monthly rent payment as well as an allotment of free electricity produced from the wind turbine. At the same time, they can maintain their lands current use since the turbines utilize such a small percentage of space. A study from The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that typical rural landowner with good wind resources would increase the economic yield of their land by 30 to 100 percent. Other land use, farming, ranching, and recreation are not affected by a single turbine.
Jobs
A variety of new jobs result from our wind power projects in your communities. Jobs in manufacturing, transportation, construction of projects, building of new roads are some of the job opportunities created by wind power projects. Once the projects are complete, jobs are created in the operation and maintenance of the projects.
The U.S. Wind industry currently contributes to the economic status of 46 states. Wind energy produces 27 percent more jobs per kilowatt-hour than coal plants and 66 percent more jobs than natural gas according to a study by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
